‘Breaking things to understand them better‘

GS Artists are delighted to announce Tess Wood as our Artist At Work, May – June 2022. 

Tess Wood is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Cardiff, Wales. Wood’s practice aims to explore the possibilities of physical and vocal means of communication through somatic experimentation. They are looking to uncover the limitless combinations of ways we can reconnect with ourselves, our bodies and the spaces we inhabit, and how this can develop deeper, more intuitive relationships. Their current research looks at how embodiment practices and use of character analysis can help us explore relationships with self and others, highlighting questions around gender, sexuality and whiteness.

Wood uses field recordings, documentation of physical movement and freeform writing inspired by site visits, to help realise their work. At its source, is a deeply engaged and ever curious child who is interested in what it means to be human.

Tess graduated from BA (Hons) Sculpture and Environmental Art in 2019 where they were awarded the Steven Campbell Trust Hunt Medal Winner prize for performance ‘Cannot Contain’ (2019). Recent works include; L’art/“GASP” (2022) commissioned by CardiffMADE,  ‘Momento Momento’ (2021) at The Thursday Show, Shift, Cardiff,  ‘A New Normal’ (2021) commissioned by Glynn Vivian Gallery, Solstice Radio (2021) hosted by Freya Dooley and Made in Roath, Cardiff. ‘POV’ (2021), with Wassili Widmer for Glasgow International Festival, Civic Room, Glasgow. ‘Oracle of Receptacle’ (2021), with Jin Wei, Asylum Chapel, London. ‘Sites Of Union’ (2021 – ongoing) with Kate Stonestreet and Eleanor Dalzell Jenyns, Post Card Response Project. Mae’n bleser gan GS Artists gyhoeddi Tess Wood fel ein Hartist yn y Gwaith cyfredol yn ystod Mai a Mehefin 2022. 

Artist amlddisgyblaethol sy’n byw ac yn gweithio yng Nghaerdydd yw Tess Wood. Nod ymarfer Wood yw archwilio posibiliadau dulliau corfforol a lleisiol o gyfathrebu trwy arbrofi somatig. Maent yn ceisio darganfod y cyfuniadau di-ben-draw o ffyrdd y gallwn ailgysylltu â’n hunain, ein cyrff a’r gofodau rydym yn byw ynddynt, a sut gall hyn ddatblygu perthnasau dyfnach, mwy greddfol. Mae eu hymchwil presennol yn edrych ar sut gall arferion ymgorfforiad a’r defnydd o ddadansoddi cymeriad ein helpu i archwilio perthnasau â’r hunan ac eraill, gan amlygu cwestiynau ynghylch rhywedd, rhywioldeb a gwynder. 

Mae Wood yn defnyddio recordiadau maes, dogfennu symudiad corfforol ac ysgrifennu rhydd wedi ei ysbrydoli gan ymweliadau safle, i’w helpu i wireddu eu gwaith. Yn sail i’r gwaith mae plentyn hynod chwilfrydig sy’n ymgysylltu’n ddwfn ac sy’n ymddiddori yn yr hyn mae’n ei olygu i fod yn ddynol.

Graddiodd Tess gyda BA (Anrh) mewn Cerflunio a Chelf Amgylcheddol yn 2019 lle dyfarnwyd Medal Hunt Ymddiriedolaeth Steven Campbell am berfformiad ‘Cannot Contain’ (2019) iddynt.     ‘L’art, CardiffMADE. 2022’

The Artist at Work opportunity was devised initially to make use of the gallery between shows, offered to artists to use as a studio space to create new work. It became part of the program, with our first official Artist- Craig Wood in January 2017. Previous artists At Work include; Cecile Johnson Soliz, Rose Davies, Joan Jones, Tim Davies, Sarah Poland, Owen Griffiths, Heledd Evans and Melissa Rodrigues. It recognises the difficulty for artists to make large, experimental works, or just have space. Despite the outcome not being fixed at the beginning, this opportunity has resulted in a wide range of events, talks, publications & discussions.

We are very excited to see what Tess produces over the next weeks, and during their time working in the gallery on Swansea High Street they will be providing weekly updates through our social media platforms- make sure you follow us on our instagram account to get the most up to date news from Tess. 

Tess say’s of the opportunity “During this time I will be focusing on three things; moving, talking and scores. Time to develop a deeper understanding of the way I move by performing to camera and using mics and my dyslexia software to record and write my thoughts as I focus on the ways my body feels and the places my mind likes to go as I move.  

Exploring ‘Talking’ in dialogues /bodies/stretches developed with live art practitioners that I have met over the years, interviewing them focusing on the question ‘What has helped you make work in the last two years, what process can you tell me about?’.  Forming a body of research around the process’ and methods that live artists use to make artwork.   I aim to create lots of material from this residency, trying to  make performance more accessible and less of a mysterious art form.  I’m collating this research material into a single PDF full of performance scores, markings, text and instructions that can be read to reproduce or replicate live art.  This will be downloadable from www.galeriesimpsonswansea.com in July 2022″

Dyfeisiwyd y prosiect Artist yn y Gwaith yn y lle cyntaf i ddefnyddio’r oriel rhwng arddangosfeydd fel gofod stiwdio i artistiaid greu gwaith newydd. Daeth yn rhan o’r rhaglen gyda’n hartist swyddogol cyntaf, Craig Wood, yn Ionawr 2017. Mae Artistiaid yn y Gwaith blaenorol yn cynnwys: Cecile Johnson Soliz, Rose Davies, Joan Jones, Tim Davies, Sarah Poland, Owen Griffiths, Heledd Evans a Melissa Rodrigues. Mae’n cydnabod yr anhawster i artistiaid greu gweithiau mawr, arbrofol neu gael lle i weithio. Er nad oes ymrwymiad ar y cychwyn, mae’r cyfleoedd hyn wedi arwain at ystod eang o ddigwyddiadau, sgyrsiau, cyhoeddiadau a thrafodaethau. 

Rydym yn gyffrous iawn i weld yr hyn mae Tess yn ei gynhyrchu dros yr wythnosau nesaf, ac yn ystod eu hamser yn gweithio yn yr oriel ar y Stryd Fawr, Abertawe,  byddant yn rhoi diweddariadau wythnosol trwy ein llwyfannau cyfryngau cymdeithasol – gwnewch yn siwr eich bod yn ein dilyn ar ein cyfrif Instagram i gael y newyddion diweddaraf gan Tess.

Dywed Tess am y cyfle “Yn ystod y cyfnod hwn, byddaf yn canolbwyntio ar dri pheth – symud, siarad a sgorau. Bydd yn amser i ddatblygu dealltwriaeth ddyfnach o’r ffordd rwy’n symud trwy berfformio i gamera a defnyddio meiciau a fy meddalwedd dyslecsia i recordio ac ysgrifennu fy meddyliau wrth ifi ganolbwyntio ar y ffyrdd mae fy nghorff yn teimlo a’r lleoedd mae fy meddwl yn hoffi mynd iddynt wrth ifi symud”.

 Byddaf yn archwilio ‘Siarad’ mewn deialogau/cyrff/estyniadau a ddatblygwyd gydag ymarferwyr celf byw rwyf wedi cwrdd â nhw dros y blynyddoedd, yn eu cyfweld gan ganolbwyntio ar y cwestiwn ‘Beth sydd wedi’ch helpu i wneud gwaith yn y ddwy flynedd ddiwethaf a pha broses allwch chi sôn amdani?’ Byddaf yn ffurfio corff o ymchwil o amgylch y broses a’r dulliau mae artistiaid byw yn eu defnyddio i wneud gwaith celf. Rwy’n anelu at greu llawer o ddeunydd o’r cyfnod preswyl hwn, gan geisio gwneud perfformio yn fwy hygyrch ac yn gelfyddyd llai dirgel. Rwy’n coladu’r deunydd ymchwil hwn yn un PDF yn llawn sgorau perfformiad, marciau, testun a chyfarwyddiadau y gellir eu darllen i atgynhyrchu neu atgynhyrchu celf fyw.
