GS Artists are delighted to announce the art collective Rat Trap as our next Artists At Work, July 25th – September 3rd, 2022.
RAT TRAP (b.2016) are an ever-evolving collective of artists and musicians that find their own routes through the maze of protocols and ways of doing things.
Their outcomes are often live events that mix music, performance and exhibition without one becoming the background for the others, blending audiences and artforms.
They focus on live-ness and works that evolve during conversations. The work is raw and unmediated, but considered and precise.
We are very excited to see what the Rat Trap Collective create during their time on Swansea High Street. They will be providing weekly updates through our social media platforms- make sure you follow us on our instagram account . They have sent us the following message-
‘RAT TRAP will be in residence at GS Swansea for seven sexy weeks! Carlota Nóbrega, Gweni Llwyd, Rhys Aneurin and Elin Meredydd will use this time as a post-covid comeback, focusing on collective creative healing. Expect collaborations, community gatherings, film experiments, loud noises‘.

The Artist at Work opportunity was devised initially to make use of the gallery between shows, offered to artists to use as a studio space to create new work. It became part of the program, with our first official Artist- Craig Wood in January 2017.
Previous artists At Work include; Cecile Johnson Soliz, Rose Davies, Joan Jones, Tim Davies, Sarah Poland, Owen Griffiths, Heledd Evans and Melissa Rodrigues. It recognises the difficulty for artists to make large, experimental works, or just have space. Despite the outcome not being fixed at the beginning, this opportunity has resulted in a wide range of events, talks, publications & discussions.

Casgliad o artistiaid a cherddorion sy’n esblygu’n barhaus ac sy’n dod o hyd i’w llwybrau eu hunain trwy ddrysfaprotocolau a ffyrdd o wneud pethau yw RAT TRAP (g. 2016).
Y canlyniad yn aml yw digwyddiadau byw sy’n cymysgu cerddoriaeth, perfformiadau ac arddangosfeydd heb i un ddod yn gefndir i’r lleill, gan gyfuno cynulleidfaoedd a chelfyddydau.
Maent yn canolbwyntio ar y cyflwr o fod yn fyw a gweithiau sy’n esblygu yn ystod sgyrsiau. Mae’r gwaith yn amrwd a heb ei gyfryngu, ond wedi ei ystyried ac yn fanwl gywir.
Rydym yn gyffrous iawn i weld beth fydd grŵp Rat Trap yn ei greu yn ystod eu hamser ar y Stryd Fawr yn Abertawe. Byddant yn darparu diweddariadau wythnosol trwy ein llwyfannau cyfryngau cymdeithasol – gwnewch yn siwr eich bod yn ein dilyn ar ein cyfrif Instagram. Maen nhw wedi anfon y neges ganlynol atom –

Dyfeisiwyd y prosiect Artist yn y Gwaith yn y lle cyntaf i ddefnyddio’r oriel rhwng arddangosfeydd fel gofod stiwdio i artistiaid greu gwaith newydd. Daeth yn rhan o’r rhaglen gyda’n hartist swyddogol cyntaf, Craig Wood, yn Ionawr 2017.

Gweni Llwyd (b.1995) is a Welsh artist currently based in Rotterdam. Her practice reflects on the expansive complexities of everyday life across tactile and digital realms. By using moving image, drawing, game engines and physical materials, her works often blur the distinction between what is here now and what exists elsewhere in time. Throughout her work there is a playful weaving of personal, collective and more-than-human experiences together as one, highlighting living as being part of a shared metabolism.
Gweni is a graduate of Cardiff School of Art and Design and a current MFA student at Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam. Recent projects, exhibitions and awards include: We Must Be Living Twice – group exhibition, European Cultural Center, 59th Venice Biennale (2022); One Day Home – workshop and live event, W139, Amsterdam (2022); Silicon Retina – solo commission, Green Man Festival, South Wales (2021); Jerwood UNITe – residency and exhibition, g39, Cardiff (2021). In 2018 Gweni was the recipient of the National Eisteddfod of Wales Young Artist Scholarship and the Arts Council of Wales Brian Ross Memorial Award.
Carlota Nóbrega (b. 1993) is a Portuguese artist and producer based in Cardiff, Wales. Carlota’s work explores the similarities and diversions between digital and physical realities by mirroring the life of her digital alter ego, Super Sexy Lota. The artist uses electronic games as a tool to mimic and reproduce digital landscapes and objects. These objects, having once been designed to the to mimic the real world, become part of a physical to digital loop.
Carlota graduated from Cardiff School of Art and Design with a BA in Fine Art and a MA Arts Management from the Royal College of Music and Drama. Recent publications and exhibitions include: Super Sexy Colouring Book, artwork for the publication Bloomers’ Hypertext, Issue 06 (2020); Performativity – a group exhibition at WWWSPACE, Seoul, South Korea (2019); Why don ’t you like me? – group performance at the V&A Friday Late, London, England (2019).
Rhys Aneurin (b.1989) is a Welsh artist and musician, based in Cardiff.
Documenting and deconstructing day-to-day urban depictions through abstract paint and sound, his practice questions how the changing of a city’s architectural face – and the constant conflict between identity and economy entwined with these changes – affects one’s sense of belonging to a place.
Rhys is a graduate from Cardiff School of Art and Design. Recent exhibitions include Agored 21 – Galeri (Caernarfon, 2021) and Rat Trap x g39 (Cardiff, 2020).
Morio Studio / Elin Meredydd (b.1992, Ynys Mon) is a text and performance-based artist and producer living in Cardiff. She performs humorous work that utilises and critiques internet sensationalism and the structures of social media, calling into question what is authentic and what is valuable. Her performative practice brings into play interior design, found objects and writing to expose private and public experiences in juxtaposition, addressing the sometimes precarious balance of the confessional and the performative.
Morio Studio studied at Wimbledon College of Art, London (BA) and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (MA). She’s co-producer of art publication ‘mwnwgl’.
Recent projects include – ‘At at at (mwnwgl)’ (digital collaboration, 2022), ‘Anghyfiaeth – mwnwgl’ (2021), ’Rat Trap x g39 (Cardiff, 2020), ‘mwnwgl Beth?’ (audio for Montez Press Radio commissioned by Yellow Back Books 2020), ‘Why don’t you like me? – group performance at the V&A Friday Late, (London, 2019).
Graddiodd Gweni o Ysgol Gelf a Dylunio Caerdydd ac mae’n fyfyrwraig MFA ar hyn o bryd yn Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam.
