Soup Talks was created by artists for artists, to revisit extended conversation about art practice, which seems to slightly halt after art college. The project creates a framework for artists to communicate, especially those that don’t necessarily know each other.
In previous cases we have paired the artists, in this round we have asked Phillipa Brown and Fern Thomas to choose artists they want to communicate with.
As well as this extended conversation, we see this platform as a way of linking up artists from Wales to those based outside and bringing artists into Wales that might not come.
The artists are asked to exchange studio visits, given funds for time, travel and additional visits. Casually described as an artist matchmaking, with some fascinating results so far…..
This batch of Soup Talks involves artist Philippa Brown who has contacted Chloe Langlois….
Soup Talk with Philippa Brown and Chloe Langlois
‘After several failed attempts to contact artists from ‘the other side’, due to lack of interest, Philippa was forced to communicate with the living. A serendipitous introduction to another artist called Chloe, who likes to talk to spirits, seemed like it might be a good second choice. Philippa and Chloe will visit each other in London and Cardiff, see what it is they get up to there, and find out where the conversation will take them‘

Above Philippa Brown “Slowly navigating a dead end”
‘I make sculptural forms, installations and paintings as a means to explore the ambiguous, magical and sometimes fragile interconnectedness between histories, materials, beliefs and bodies of all kinds.
Nostalgia, subcultures and the occult are often the portals through which I explore conformity and alternative ways of living, using magic as a strategy and tactic for living, a form of creative resistance. There is an undercurrent of playfulness and humor that runs through my work, but with an ominous tension lurking beneath the surface, reflecting on the opposing forces, dark and joyful, within both human experience and nature.
The artworks emerge through my intuitive studio-practice-as-daily-ritual, creating new meaning in objects and hybrid narratives that move fluidly between fact and fiction, certainty and uncertainty. My bricolage approach to art making is a way of looking at creative and everyday resourcefulness and resilience through the repurposing of the prosaic and the throwaway. Re-imagining and transforming mundane materials, develops new possibilities, pathways and connections.
I embrace the fundamental instability, imperfection and failure inherent in this experimental studio practice. It is a human and material collaboration which, through a process of alchemical experimentation, conjures uncanny visions that delve into witchcraft, allegorical stories, symbolism and mythologies both ancient and personal.

‘Originally from London, I completed my BA in Painting at Chelsea College of Art, then worked in a betting shop for nearly eight years, moved to Nottingham, and returned to the compulsion of art making after finding a group of weirdos with similar tastes in art, comedy, and the occult. During the pandemic I moved into a guardianship property with thirty people I didn’t know, and completed my MA in Moving Image at the RCA, making work in a completely circular former care home with my housemates. Working with the messy and the magical in video and live performance, my current interests lie in channelling, re-enactment, non verbal communication, and collective euphoria.
I have taken part in SCHÜLE WAMPE, a parasitic research based sub-residency with Kühle Wampe at Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham (2019),
NEW HENGE HERITAGE, a six month Arts Council funded residency in collaboration with Arianne Churchman at Metal, Peterborough (2017).
I was a trustee of Film Free And Easy, a DIY film and video event based at Primary, Nottingham (2018 – 2019), and this year I set up and have been running a regular performance night at The Amersham Arms, London, called The Magnificences’.

Crëwyd ‘Sgyrsiau dros Gawl’ gan artistiaid ar gyfer artistiaid, yn enwedig y rhai nad ydynt o reidrwydd yn adnabod ei gilydd. Mae’r prosiect yn creu fframwaith ar gyfer sgyrsiau estynedig am ymarfer celf, sydd fel petai’n dod i ben ar ôl dyddiau coleg.
Cyn hyn, rydym wedi paru’r artistiaid ond yn y rownd hon, rydym wedi gofyn i Phillipa Brown a Fern Thomas ddewis artistiaid maen nhw am gyfathrebu â nhw. Yn ogystal â’r sgwrs estynedig hon, rydym yn gweld y platfform hwn fel ffordd o gysylltu artistiaid o Gymru â’r rhai wedi eu lleoli y tu allan, a dod ag artistiaid i mewn i Gymru na fyddant, efallai, yn dod.
Gofynnir i’r artistiaid gyfnewid ymweliadau â stiwdios, gan gael arian ar gyfer amser, teithio ac ymweliadau ychwanegol. Wedi ei ddisgrifio’n achlysurol fel paru artistiaid, gyda rhai canlyniadau hynod ddiddorol hyd yn hyn – darllenwch ragor yma –
Mae’r swp hwn o Sgyrsiau dros Gawl yn cynnwys yr Artist Philippa Brown sydd wedi cysylltu â’r artist Chloe Langlois. Darllenwch ragor…
Sgwrs dros Gawl gyda Philippa Brown a Chloe Langlois
Ar ôl sawl ymgais aflwyddiannus i gysylltu ag artistiaid o’r ‘ochr arall’, oherwydd diffyg diddordeb, gorfodwyd Philippa i gyfathrebu â’r byw. Roedd cyflwyniad serendipaidd i artist arall o’r enw Chloe, sy’n hoffi siarad gydag ysbrydion, yn ymddangos fel y gallai fod yn ail ddewis da. Bydd Philippa a Chloe yn ymweld â’i gilydd yn Llundain a Chaerdydd, yn gweld beth maen nhw’n ei wneud yno, ac yn gweld lle bydd y sgwrs yn mynd â nhw.

Rwy’n gwneud ffurfiau cerfluniol, gosodwaith a phaentiadau fel modd i archwilio’r rhyng-gysylltiad amwys, hudol ac weithiau bregus rhwng hanes, defnyddiau, credoau a chyrff o bob math.
Yn aml, hiraeth, isddiwylliannau a’r ocwlt yw’r pyrth byddaf yn eu defnyddio i archwilio cydymffurfiaeth a ffyrdd amgen o fyw trwyddynt, gan ddefnyddio hud fel strategaeth a thacteg ar gyfer byw, ffurf ar wrthwynebiad creadigol. Mae islif o chwarëusrwydd a hiwmor yn rhedeg trwy fy ngwaith, ond gyda thensiwn bygythiol yn llechu o dan y wyneb, gan fyfyrio ar y grymoedd gwrthwynebol, tywyll a llawen, o fewn profiad dynol a natur.
Mae’r gweithiau celf yn dod i’r amlwg trwy fy ymarfer stiwdio fel defod ddyddiol reddfol, gan greu ystyr newydd mewn gwrthrychau a naratifau hybrid sy’n symud yn llyfn rhwng ffaith a ffuglen, sicrwydd ac ansicrwydd. Mae fy agwedd bricolage at wneud celf yn ffordd o edrych ar ddyfeisgarwch a gwytnwch creadigol a bob dydd trwy ail-bwrpasu’r rhyddiaith a’r taflu i ffwrdd. Mae ail-ddychmygu a thrawsnewid deunyddiau cyffredin yn datblygu posibiliadau, llwybrau a chysylltiadau newydd.
Rwy’n cofleidio’r ansefydlogrwydd, yr amherffeithrwydd a’r methiant sylfaenol sy’n gynhenid yn yr ymarfer stiwdio arbrofol hwn. Mae’n gydweithrediad dynol a materol sydd, trwy broses o arbrofi alcemegol, yn creu gweledigaethau rhyfedd sy’n treiddio i ddewiniaeth, straeon alegorïaidd, symbolaeth a mytholegau hynafol a phersonol.
