Dislocated, Detached – Artist At Work with Tess Wood

An invitation to preview research with performance artist Tess Wood, developed during their Artist at Work Residency at GS Artists Swansea.
Tess Wood will be finalising their residency at the end of January with a 3-day event ‘Dislocated, Detached’. This show will be a space to experience and engage in the research Wood has been developing in the space around somatic exploration and performance technique.
During this time Wood has been searching for ways to include text in their performances, Wood says about the research: ‘Using the voice in live art has been difficult for me. It can give too much away or be too theatrical. I have been exploring how finding words through the body provides more abstract text to work with. I have a new method where I record the images and feelings that come up in the body whilst meditating and dancing. These words are then reworked and developed as sound pieces which provide a backdrop to the performances’.
Wood will also be showing a new performance work ‘Dislocated, Detached’ which explores the effects of head-banging as cathartic ritual for the mind and body. This piece is accompanied by a soundscape which includes text written during meditations and movement explorations around the theme of pain, cycles and survival tactics. During the opening there will also be a collection of offerings gathered by Wood from artists: Kane Stonestreet, Beth Greenhalgh, Zan Yamashita, June Campbell-Davies & Marega Palser. Wood asked the following artists – the question ‘What helped you engage with your creativity during lockdown?’ To try and hold on to and work with the dislocation we have all experienced over the past three years.
Tess Wood is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Cardiff, Wales. Wood’s practice aims to explore the possibilities of physical and vocal means of communication through somatic experimentation. They are looking to uncover the limitless combinations of ways we can reconnect with ourselves, our bodies and the spaces we inhabit, and how this can develop deeper, more intuitive relationships. Their current research looks at how embodiment practices and use of character analysis can help us explore relationships with self and others, highlighting questions around gender, sexuality and whiteness.
Wood uses field recordings, documentation of physical movement and freeform writing inspired by site visits, to help realise their work. At its source, is a deeply engaged and ever curious child who is interested in what it means to be human.

Tess Graduated from BA (Hons) Sculpture and Environmental Art in 2019 where they were awarded the Steven Campbell Trust Hunt Medal Winner prize for performance ‘Cannot Contain’ (2019). The Artist at Work opportunity was devised initially to make use of the gallery between shows, offered to artists to use as a studio space to create new work. It became part of the program, with our first official Artist- Craig Wood in January 2017. Previous artists At Work include; Cecile Johnson Soliz, Rose Davies, Joan Jones, Tim Davies, Sarah Poland, Owen Griffiths, Heledd Evans and Melissa Rodrigues. It recognizes the difficulty for artists to make large, experimental works, or just have space. Despite the outcome not being fixed at the beginning, this opportunity has resulted in a wide range of events, talks, publications & discussions.

Bydd Tess Wood yn gorffen eu cyfnod preswyl ar ddiwedd Ionawr gyda digwyddiad 3 diwrnod o’r enw ‘Dislocated, Detached’. Bydd y sioe hon yn ofod i brofi a chymryd rhan yn yr ymchwil y mae Wood wedi bod yn ei datblygu yn y gofod o amgylch archwilio somatig a thechneg perfformio.
Yn ystod y cyfnod hwn, mae Wood wedi bod yn chwilio am ffyrdd o gynnwys testun yn eu perfformiadau. Dywed Wood am yr ymchwil: ‘Mae defnyddio’r llais mewn celf fyw wedi bod yn anodd ifi. Gall ddatgelu gormod neu fod yn rhy theatrig. Rwyf wedi bod yn archwilio sut mae dod o hyd i eiriau trwy’r corff yn darparu testun mwy haniaethol i weithio ag ef. Mae gen i ddull newydd o gofnodi’r delweddau a’r teimladau sy’n codi yn y corff wrth fyfyrio a dawnsio. Caiff y geiriau hyn eu hailweithio wedi hynny, a’u datblygu fel darnau sain sy’n rhoi cefndir i’r perfformiadau’.
Bydd Wood hefyd yn dangos gwaith perfformio newydd o’r enw ‘Dislocated, Detached’,sy’n archwilio effeithiau curo pen fel defod cathartig i’r meddwl a’r corff. I gyd-fynd â’r darn hwn mae seinwedd sy’n cynnwys testun a ysgrifennwyd yn ystod myfyrdodau ac archwiliadau symud o amgylch themâu poen, cylchoedd a thactegau goroesi. Yn ystod yr agoriad hefyd, bydd casgliad o gyfraniadau gan artistiaid eraill a gasglwyd gan Wood. Gofynnodd Wood i’r artistiaid Kane Stonestreet, Beth Greenhalgh, Zan Yamashita, June Campbell-Davies a Marega Palser y cwestiwn ‘Beth helpodd chi i ymgysylltu â’ch creadigrwydd yn ystod y cyfnod clo?’, i geisio dal gafael ar yr anhrefn a brofwyd gennym ni gyd dros y tair blynedd diwethaf, a gweithio gyda hwnnw.
Artist amlddisgyblaethol sy’n byw ac yn gweithio yng Nghaerdydd yw Tess Wood. Nod ymarfer Wood yw archwilio posibiliadau dulliau corfforol a lleisiol o gyfathrebu trwy arbrofi somatig. Maent yn ceisio darganfod y cyfuniadau di-ben-draw o ffyrdd y gallwn ailgysylltu â’n hunain, ein cyrff a’r gofodau rydym yn byw ynddynt, a sut gall hyn ddatblygu perthnasau dyfnach, mwy greddfol. Mae eu hymchwil presennol yn edrych ar sut gall arferion ymgorfforiad a’r defnydd o ddadansoddi cymeriad ein helpu i archwilio perthnasau â’r hunan ac eraill, gan amlygu cwestiynau ynghylch rhywedd, rhywioldeb a gwynder.
Mae Wood yn defnyddio recordiadau maes, dogfennu symudiad corfforol ac ysgrifennu rhydd wedi ei ysbrydoli gan ymweliadau safle, i’w helpu i wireddu eu gwaith. Yn sail i’r gwaith mae plentyn hynod chwilfrydig sy’n ymgysylltu’n ddwfn ac sy’n ymddiddori yn yr hyn mae’n ei olygu i fod yn ddynol.
