Next up at GS Artists Swansea
‘ILLUMINATE Architecture and Light’ photography exhibition & Catrin Saran James – Artist At Work.
Twenty-five photographers capture the interplay between modernist architecture and light. 12.09.24 – 28.09.24
Following its exhibition in Leeds and Manchester, this photography exhibition is arriving in Swansea.

Light transforms how we perceive and experience buildings. It can highlight or hide, soften or exaggerate. It is able to make places seem enchanting or unfamiliar. In September 2023, the Leeds Modernist Society invited photographers to capture the interplay between modernist architecture and light on camera. The call went out to all the chapter cities of The Modernist family; Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Huddersfield, Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool, and Swansea.
The panel of photographer Simon Phipps, RIBA Journal Editor Eleanor Young and Jack Hale of The Modernist have selected the 25 images that will be presented in Swansea.
This exhibition comes with an accompanying catalogue
This exhibition runs parallel with Catrin Saran James Artist At Work residency on the High Street where the artist will create new collage work, based on the themes explored in Illuminate.
“It is an honour to have this residency at GS Artists this September and be located in Swansea city centre.
Swansea’s post war architecture is my inspiration as always & I’ll be surrounded by the stunning ILLUMINATION exhibition curated by The Modernist Society at the gallery.
I’m looking forward to creating new work which reflects the way our Modernist and Brutalist buildings are changing, the vanishing details of our mid 20th century built heritage, to their future use which opens the conversation of how fast the familiar immediate past is being erased from design history“.

‘LLEWYRCH Pensaernïaeth a Golau’ arddangosfa ffotograffiaeth + Catrin Saran James – Artist Wrth Ei Gwaith.
Pump ffotograffydd ar hugain yn dogfennu’r cyd chwarae rhwng pensaernïaeth fodernaidd a goleuni.
12.09.24 – 28.09.24
Yn dilyn sioeau yn Leeds a Manceinion, mae’r arddangosfa drawiadol hon o ffotograffau yn cyrraedd Abertawe.

Mae goleuni’n trawsnewid y modd yr ydym yn synied am a phrofi adeiladau. Mae’n gallu pwysleisio neu guddio, meddalu neu or-liwio. Mae’n gallu gwneud i lefydd ymddangos yn hudolus neu’n anghyfarwydd. Ym mis Medi 2023, gwahoddodd Cymdeithas Modernaidd Leeds ffotograffwyr i gofnodi’r cyd-chwarae rhwng pensaernïaeth fodernaidd a golau ar gamera. Cafodd yr alwad ei wneud i bob dinas sy’n rhan o deulu The Modernist; Manceinion, Birmingham, Glasgow, Huddersfield, Sheffield, Leeds, Lerpŵl, ac Abertawe.
Mae panel arbenigol o ffotograffwyr wedi dewis y 25 delwedd fydd yn cael eu harddangos yn Abertawe, sef Simon Phipps, Eleanor Young, Golygydd Cyfnodolyn RIBA a Jack Hale o The Modernist.
Ceir catalog i gydfynd â’r arddangosfa.
Mae’r arddangosfa hon yn cyd-redeg gyda phreswylfa Artist Wrth Ei Gwaith Catrin James ar Y Stryd Fawr lle bydd yr artist yn creu gwaith torlun newydd, yn seiliedig ar y themâu sydd yn Llewyrch / Illuminate.
“Mae’n anrhydedd cael y cyfnod preswyl hwn yn GS Artists ym mis Medi eleni a chael ei leoli yng nghanol dinas Abertawe.
Pensaernïaeth Abertawe ar ôl y rhyfel yw fy ysbrydoliaeth fel bob amser a byddaf yn cael fy amgylchynu gan yr arddangosfa drawiadol ILLUMINATION a guradwyd gan Gymdeithas Modernaidd yr oriel.
Rwy’n edrych ymlaen at greu gwaith newydd sy’n adlewyrchu’r ffordd y mae ein hadeiladau Modernaidd a Brutalist yn newid, manylion ein treftadaeth adeiledig o ganol yr 20fed ganrif, i’w defnydd yn y dyfodol sy’n agor y sgwrs am ba mor gyflym y mae’r gorffennol uniongyrchol cyfarwydd yn cael ei ddileu o hanes dylunio’
